Mental Health: Knowing When to Seek Help

Doctor and patient

Mental health awareness has grown in significant importance over the years. People are beginning to realize that our minds are just as important to take care of our bodies. But there is still not enough knowledge and experience in the field. That’s why there are still a lot of people who do not know how to address their own mental health concerns, and the rest of us are still somewhat unsure of how to help someone with mental health issues. There is still a stigma that depression merely equates to sadness, and that it can be overcome easily. But mental health issues are far more complex than that.

In May each year, we hold the Mental Health Awareness Month. It’s an effort to raise recognition on the importance of mental health and to educate people on how to contribute to mental health care. Psychologists and health experts come together towards a common goal and advocacy.

If you or someone you know has a mental health issue, you need to know when help must be sought after. It’s true that a lot of people are afraid or ashamed to talk to experts about their mental conditions, but doing so will be of great aid and benefit. Here’s when professional help must be sought.

When you start finding comfort in substances

Going out and indulging in alcohol or having a night out with friends is fine. But this should be done only occasionally and as an act of leisure. Many people, however, excessively consume alcohol too much and too often. It then becomes a mental health issue if this act persists and starts affecting personal and professional relationships. Those whose substance abuse interferes with their health, relationships, job, and responsibilities should seek the help of a professional and consider addiction recovery centers.

When you find that you cannot control your negative thoughts

Life can get pretty overwhelming at times. Hence, stress, burnout, and anxiety are common emotions we feel on a daily basis. In fact, 73% of people experience regular psychological symptoms caused by stress.

There are also instances when we have a sudden shift in mood. Our smiles can turn upside down in a snap of a finger, without reason or explanation. Anyone who experiences these sudden bursts of uncontrollable emotions that affect their sense of self-worth should never be ashamed to ask for help or to talk to an expert.

When you struggle to overcome challenges

Life’s dynamic nature makes change inevitable. Some changes may be good, but others are overwhelming and challenging. As humans, we are inherently capable of overcoming challenges. But some people have a harder time doing so than others. Whenever something unforeseen and undesirable happens in your life and you’re finding it hard to cope, don’t be afraid to talk to someone about it. Voicing out your feelings can help you process your thoughts and emotions, and the companionship will remind you that you’re not alone through these challenges.

When you lose a sense of purpose

We all have a contribution to make in this world. And we all should have the opportunity to live our lives to the fullest. The world may knock us down, but nothing is stopping you from getting back up on your feet. If, however, you begin losing your sense of purpose and being, speaking to a professional will help you conquer your negative emotions and reignite your passion for life.

Just like how we take care of our bodies, we should also be keeping our mental health in check. Remember that learning when to ask for help is the first step towards recovery.
